My sister, seven months pregnant with twins, has been in the hospital for observation after some unexpected test results, but she’s been cleared and will be home early this week. I visited her after work on Friday. She’s at the hospital across the street from our last apartment, so walking there after work felt like walking home two years ago. She’s feeling more or less normal, not wearing a hospital gown or staying in bed, so it was strange to visit her in the maternity wing, with crying babies and families with balloons and flowers visiting the other rooms. Scott and I went to see her yesterday after having a late lunch in the neighbourhood. It started raining while we were eating, and started pouring as soon as we were ready to leave. We were walking, not driving, but I had an umbrella. We thought about waiting it out but figured it would let up at any minute, since it rarely pours for long, but it lasted as long as it took for us to walk to the hospital, huddled under the umbrella, wading through streams flowing downhill across the sidewalks and along the streets. Mostly just our heads were dry by the time we arrived. My shirt and jeans and sandals were still wet when we went home.
