She knew that her efforts would be recognised. One night, soon, someone senior enough to be significant but not familiar enough to be a friend would lay a hand on her shoulder after everybody else had gone home and tell her just how much it meant to them all at the company that she put in such effort day after day without any expectation as to her own reward.
